Essen International Regatta, May 19th-20th 2001, Germany
Official BIRO report
Great Britain's crews made a promising start to the European season at a windy Essen Regatta with a good run of silver and bronze medal performances. It was a good first regatta after the introduction of the new women's and lightweight programmes under the management of Marty Aitken. International Manager David Tanner said: "The number of second and third places across the team demonstrates depth but we need to pick up and improve before the World Cup in Seville next month."
The newly formed men's coxless four of Ed Coode, Steve Williams, Toby Garbett and Phillip Simmons were close to victory, only losing by a second to Romania. The Romanians led throughout the race, just holding off a strong surge by the British boat, with three world champions on board, in the last 500 metres.
The new women's pair of Olympic silver medallist Katherine Grainger and Cath Bishop also came second, finishing 1.59 seconds behind a strong German pair. Grainger said: "It was our first race. It wasn't perfect but we were happy to be up there." The pair hopes to improve on their second place tomorrow.
The lightweight men's squad demonstrated the progress made since Sydney with a second place in the key Olympic boat class of lightweight coxless four, an event in which Great Britain did not qualify for the Olympics.
Essen is also the first outing for the potential GB Under 23 squad and three bronze medals for the U23s on the first day showed the basis of a strong team for Lintz.
Essen Regatta continues Sunday with a second full racing program of heats and finals.
